Castlerahan win first ever county championship and put an end to finals duck

Jack O'Toole

There’s a fine line between persistence and insanity.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Persistence is the fact of continuing in an opinion or course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition.

The Castlerahan players have probably flirted with both ends of that spectrum over the last three years after losing three consecutive county finals to Kingscourt Stars, Ramor United and the Cavan Gaels respectively.

On Sunday, Castlerahan came up against Crosserlough in their fourth consecutive Cavan Senior Football Championship final and the Ballyjamesduff club finally got over the line with a 2-11 to 1-13 win.

Castlerahan had previously won two Cavan Intermediate Football Championships in 1966 and 2001 but they finally landed their first senior championship on Sunday and ended an unwanted finals losing streak in the process.

Seb Daly of Sportsfile was on hand to capture the win and there’s some brilliant pictures that sum up just how much the victory meant to the Castlerahan players.
