Battle lines drawn as Mayo managers set to sit down with players tomorrow

To be a fly on the wall at tomorrow’s meeting.

All the indications are that Mayo’s joint managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly will not stand down, despite their players taking a vote of no-confidence in them.

The reported tally of 27-7 suggests the pair face an uphill battle to retain control of the five-in-a-row Connacht champions, even if some high profile names are thought to be in the minority.

Which brings us to Thursday’s meeting between the management, county board officials and the players’ representatives, captain Keith Higgins and Cillian O’Connor.

Many in the county are asking why the players could not wait until tomorrow’s scheduled meeting before dropping their bombshell, however the leak to local newspapers, the Mayo News and Connaught Telegraph, is not believed to have come from the players.

As outlined last night by county secretary Vincent Neary on Newstalk, Holmes and Connelly are unaware of the players’ specific complaints, even if rumours of dissatisfaction have been rampant before, during and after the championship.

“(There’s) no reason given as to why this has happened. The management haven’t been told why they have a vote of no-confidence in them and that’s disappointing,” said Neary.

While the players have resisted the urge to take to Twitter, the management have been getting their (entirely fictional) point across, via a parody account.
