Austin Gleeson still winces when he recalls his biggest fashion crime

Can't blame the lad

Patrick McCarry

We wish we could see a picture of this.

Austin Gleeson would strike many a person as a fashionable young man.

The double [young and senior] Hurler of the Year was looking suitably stylish at Croke Park, earlier today, for the launch of Littlewood Ireland’s GAA sponsorship for the next three years. Gleeson posed for photographs and bestrode a runway with Cork and Kilkenny legends Anna Geary and Jackie Tyrrell.

SportsJOE caught up with Gleeson to discuss some of his fashion highs, but mostly his fashion lows.

Asked if a fashion foul-up from his past still rankled, Gleeson’s eyes glazed over as he recalled an item of clothes that did not stay the course. He said:

“I had this jumper a few years back that I thought was very fashionable but was, in actual fact, six or seven two sizes big for me. It was swimming on me. I didn’t have it for too long.”

This is not the jumper…

Former Kilkenny defender Tyrrell’s biggest fashion gaffe, he told us, was not something he wore. Rather it was a hairstyle he regrets.

The year was 2010 and Tyrrell, already with five All-Ireland winners’ medals, to his name, decided to let the hair go. He said:

“I grew my hair in 2010 and there are still dodgy photos of it going around. It was definitely the worst mistake I ever made in my life.”

It was a mistake and there are photos doing the rounds.

Can’t win them all.

Sometimes though…

That’s better.
