“He is innocent of all charges and vows to do everything in his power to clear his name.”

A man has been questioned by the police over an alleged incident which took place on the Armagh football team’s holiday to Miami last month.

The Armagh man voluntarily presented himself to the police and was quizzed over “suspicion of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.”

To celebrate their All-Ireland win over Galway, the Armagh team, along with family members, coaching staff and senior figures on the county board, travelled to Miami in November.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, on Tuesday, December 10.

“He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”

However, the man in question denies the charges.

A statement from solicitor Patrick Higgins from Donnelly and Wall Solicitors said: “My client voluntarily presented himself to the PSNI yesterday to be interviewed.

“He co-operated fully with the PSNI in the initial stages of the investigation.

“He is innocent of all charges and vows to do everything in his power to clear his name.”

The Miami police have also released a statement, confirming that no reports were made to them: “After conducting a thorough review of the limited information provided, our records do not indicate that any incidents of sexual battery were reported at the Eden Roc Hotel during the period from November 13 to November 20.”

The Sunday World has provided more details on the trip, which reportedly cost around £3000 per person.

They have said that the ‘near 100-strong party’ stayed at the prestigious five-star Eden Roc Miami Beach resort, where rooms come to around €400 per night.

The trip was partly funded by the GAA, with fundraisers run by clubs throughout the county making up the difference.
