Well, this was unexpected.
Laois started as 1/6 favourites in their home round one qualifier against Antrim, and many expected the O’Moore County to record an easy win. For long periods it looked like it would be the case as Laois opened up a commanding nine point lead at one stage and were apparently 1/80 to win with 10 minutes to go.
But Antrim roared back to win by 2-15 to 1-16 and they were no doubt aided by the Twitter novenas from their social media coordinator.
It was an important win, not only for Antrim, but also for the championship as a whole, which so far has lacked any real suspense as the favourites dominate.
The other underdogs weren’t as successful today though, with Cavan hammering London by 2-22 to 0-11 while Offaly saw off Waterford by 1-20 to 1-7.
Hopefully the other weaker counties channel Antrim’s spirit in the next round of qualifiers next weekend. Are the Saffrons worth a sneaky 50 cent bet to win it all at 2000/1?
