While many players were quite relieved to see the back of Louis van Gaal, we reckon Juan Mata may have been wrapping his arms around the Dutchman’s ankles, trying to stop him at the Old Trafford threshold.
You may remember the coldness with which Jose Mourinho, van Gaal’s successor, ended Mata’s Chelsea career in 2014 by selling him to the Red Devils despite the Spaniard having been named Player of the Year in consecutive seasons at Stamford Bridge.
So Mata may not welcome Mourinho to United in the same way that others will.
The midfielder is expected to be a part of an overhaul of personnel under Mourinho and a surprising name has emerged as a potential destination for Mata.
Spanish outlet El Confidencial are reporting that West Ham are closely monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation as Slaven Bilic aims to build on the Hammers’ 7th placed finish last season.
West Ham are eager to bring in a big-name signing to coincide with their move to the Olympic Stadium and having a midfield consisting of Mata and Dimitri Payet would be a massive statement from the club.
The London side will be up against La Liga outfit Valencia who are keen on bringing Mata back to the Mestalla next season.
