Thomas Delaney scored arguably the goal of the week in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The FC Copenhagen midfielder unleashed an unstoppable effort from 30-yards during the side’s 3-0 victory over Club Brugge.
Delaney, the Danish side’s captain, connected with a sweet left-footed shot that swerved and went in off the post, leaving the Brugge goalkeeper motionless.
It’s worth watching until the final replay to see the spin Delaney put on the ball. An incredible hit.
The 25-year-old’s distinctly Irish sounding surname may have caught the attention of Irish fans wondering why a player with such a cultured left-foot has been allowed to slip away from the FAI.
However, unfortunately for the Republic of Ireland team, the “granny rule” doesn’t extend back to the 18th century.
Delaney’s ancestors emigrated to America from Ireland over 200 years ago, before a branch of the family moved to Denmark. He has American citizenship, but has 11 caps for Denmark.
The midfielder, who is set to join German side Werder Bremen in January, wasn’t eligible for Ireland before being capped by his native country. It looks like we’ll just have to produce our own players.
