WATCH: Slaven Bilic reveals why Dejan Lovren didn’t make Croatia’s Euro 2016 squad

This is bizarre

Robert Redmond

Dejan Lovren missed out on Euro 2016.

The Liverpool defender was omitted from Croatia’s squad following an argument with Ante Cacic back in March.

Lovren subsequently refused to apologise, and the Croatian coach called his bluff, saying:

“I haven’t closed the door on Lovren for good, he can return one day if he realises that he has to be a team player. When it dawns on him that he can’t look down on his team-mates, the staff and the coach, he will perhaps find a way to get back in.”

The West Ham manager, and former Croatia coach and defender, is on punditry duty for ITV at Euro 2016, and offered some insight on the incident.

Croatia were playing a friendly against Hungary in March and Lovren was sent to warm-up. However, the defender performed the warm-up routine in the manner he would with his club side, and his coach took issue.

Bilic called it a “misunderstanding” and neither side were prepared to back down in a bizarre incident that cost Lovren his place at the finals.
