It’s great to have Gary Neville back on Monday Night Football and alongside Jamie Carragher.
The former Valencia coach was back in his old role for the first time since late last year, after giving up his punditry duties to try his hand at management.
Neville was speaking about Manchester City’s new £47.5m signing John Stones ahead of Chelsea’s game against West Ham on Monday evening.
The former England coach, who worked with Stones for the national team, tipped the defender to develop under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, in the manner Gerard Pique did when he worked under the Catalan at Barcelona.
Carragher replied to Neville’s impassioned praise of Stones by saying:
“You never picked him in the summer!”
Stones was third-choice central defender, in a squad featuring three central defenders, for one of the worst England defences in recent memory.
Carragher wasn’t about to let his old sparring partner return without landing a few digs about Neville’s troubles during his coaching stint.
