Man United are expected to spend big again in January and in the summer to solve some of their current problems.
Louis van Gaal has been openly critical of Bastian Schweinsteiger, and neither one of Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin or Ander Herrera seem able to keep their place in the Dutchman’s team.
On top of that they can’t score for toffee, whilst the defence looked worryingly porous against Wolfsburg. Oh, and David de Gea may need replacing soon too.
However, Roy Keane isn’t sure throwing money about willy-nilly will solve his old club’s predicament if the right players aren’t targeted – specifically those with the necessary leadership qualities and character.
“I think there has been an improvement no doubt, particularly in the league form, but in Europe it doesn’t seem to have taken any steps forward – considering the money they’ve invested,” argues Keane.
He also questions the overall transfer strategy. Ed Woodward and the club have previously been accused of focusing on ‘marquee signings’, rather than what the squad actually needs.
Keane believes it is inclear who is coordinating the recruitment process, or what exactly their motivation is.
“You look at the recruitment – who is recruiting the players? Is it the manager?
“I know David Moyes would’ve been frustrated when he first went in there. The players he was chasing, they never got them done.
“It’s not about throwing money at the club and [just] bringing good players in.
“To me at Man United, you need certain characters as well as good players, and they seem to be lacking characters on top of everything else.”
