Boca Juniors brought the Superclasico rivalry to a new level last night.
It was the third time in 12 days that the fierce rivals came head to head, this time in the second leg of their last 16 Copa Libertadores tie. River took a 1-0 lead into last night’s game at La Bombonera, after their second meeting last week.
While last week’s game showed what’s great about this famous rivalry, last night will go down as one of Superclasico’s darkest moments.
With the sides level at 0-0 before the start of the second half, Rover Plate’s players were reportedly pepper-sprayed as they came back onto the pitch.
This video shows the players covering and rubbing their faces, as several Boca fans are seen interfering with the stadium’s tunnel.
The game was suspended for more than an hour, as riot police had to form a protective tunnel to get the players off the pitch.
There has been no indication when, or if, the remaining 45 minutes of the tie will be played.
