We were sure it would have been a defender
He might be in the twilight of his career now but Raul is a bona-fide football legend. The Real Madrid goalscoring machine left the club in 2010 after scoring over 200 goals in his 16 year spell at the club.
He’s now plying his trade in the MLS for New York Cosmos, and has been speaking to Sports Illustrated about his reasons for heading to the States as well as discussing some of the best players he’s ever faced on a football field.
He played with players such as Zidane and Ronaldo while he also faced players such as Roy Keane and Alessandro Del Piero in his many adventures through Europe with Madrid in his glorious club career.
Raul name checks Paolo Maldini as the toughest defender he ever faced, while he’s opted for Bayern Munich’s Ollie Kahn as the man he hated to see between the sticks.
He then gives the ultimate compliment to Lionel Messi describing the Barcelona man as better than any player he has ever played against:
‘I was lucky enough to play with Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo, Cristiano but Messi is different. He makes everything look so easy, so effortless, even the impossible.
‘When you watch him play, it’s almost as though you are watching him in the street playing with his friends.
From the time when I started out, the best players around then were Roberto Baggio and Ryan Giggs.’
