Louis van Gaal finally sent a team out to score goals and they scored three. Only problem is they missed a couple of sitters… oh, and conceded three.
Manchester United fans were strangely soothed, last night, despite their team blowing a 2-0 lead at 18th place Newcastle.
The fact that United went out and took on Toon from the outset hinted that all may not be lost. The cavalier nature of the Red Devils had a feint pulse but blood coursed last night.
Van Gaal’s side had two golden opportunities to settle their league clash but Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini wasted them both.
United supporters may not have ever seen their manager get as animated as they did – just after the hour mark – when Lingard blazed over. Had he scored, it would have been 3-1 to the visitors.
Within four minutes, Lingard was substituted.
In the final 10 minutes, with United 3-2 up, Fellaini inexplicably headed straight at Rob Elliot when he had the rest of the Newcastle goal to pick out. The match ended in a 3-3 draw.
Post-match, Louis van Gaal name-checked the two players and their missed chances.
“We should have finished this match much earlier,” said van Gaal.
“We had big chances for Lingard and Fellaini but we didn’t do that.”
In his BT Sport interview, van Gaal returned to the wasteful duo and highlighted a first half miss by Wayne Rooney as costing his team dearly.
