Video: A despondent Wayne Rooney opens up about Van Gaal and a terrible month

He looks like a broken man.

Louis van Gaal may be under immense pressure at the moment for his failing team and dull tactics, but Wayne Rooney isn’t far behind. The England striker is enduring a barren season and is seen by many to be a major part of the problem.

Indeed, a major criticism of Van Gaal is that he continues to pick the misfiring striker despite his poor form. So it can’t have been easy for the Manchester United captain to face the cameras and speak about the current dross that is United’s form.

But he did, and for that at least he deserves some credit. It’s an intriguing watch. He says all the right things – backing the manager, stressing the unity of the squad – but there’s no bullishness or defiance about him. Rather he seems extremely subdued and almost broken.

Judge for yourself. United fans will be hoping for a little less conversation and a little more action against Stoke…
