Midfield is a big issue for United.
Man United have made initial contact with Tottenham over the possibility of signing Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in this transfer window.
Hojbjerg has been a regular feature for Spurs over the past few years, playing consistently under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, but doesn’t seem to be in the same favour for Ange Postecoglou.
The midfielder has only came off the bench so far this season, and looked like he was on his way to Atletico Madrid before that potential move broke down.
It’s no secret that United are struggling in midfield at the moment, and even their impressive comeback against Nottingham Forest couldn’t paper over the obvious cracks.
Casemiro is still fantastic and got a goal at the weekend, but doesnt’ have the legs or energy to do a lot of the heavy tufting, while Bruno Fernandes is a creative-type player, and Mason Mount is out with injury.
It was actually against Spurs where these problems were really highlighted, and they were completely overran in a 2-0 defeat that Roy Keane labelled as “embarrassing.”
Hojbjerg has played for Erik ten Hag when the Dutchman was in charge of Bayern Munich’s reserve team back in 2013, and he even tried to sign him for Ajax when he was playing for Southampton.
This move doesn’t mean that they have given up hope in signing Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat or Ryan Gravenberch from Munich, but they are in direct competition with Liverpool for these players.
The injury list is piling up, and the options in midfield are looking scarce, so we could see United signing two or maybe even more players before the window is shut.
