He had to fork out almost £250 in fees

Watford midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru was fined after dodging a £100 train fare, despite earning thousands of pounds a week.

Dele-Bashiru – full name Ayotomiwa Sherif Tom Dele-Bashiru – failed to pay for a rail journey he made from Reading to Manchester on December 18 last year.

The 22-year-old, who was on loan at Reading at the time, did not purchase a ticket that should have been priced at £103.50. As a result, he was the subject of a hearing at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on June 8, and ordered to pay a £140 fine.

He was also ordered to pay £103.50 compensation to the Cross Country railway service, taking his total to almost £250 in fees.

As reported by the Mirror, a number of industry websites state that Dele-Bashiru’s salary is estimated to range between £4,600-£8,000 per week.

Dele-Bashiru made 38 appearances for the Royals last season, scoring four times and registering three assists.

New manager at the helm

The midfielder has now returned to parent club Watford and will be hoping to impress new boss Rob Edwards. The Hornets will once again be competing in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League.

Dele-Bashiru joined Watford in 2019 on a six-year contract, joining the club from Manchester City. However, he has played just five times for them so far.

Should Edwards chose to utilise Dele-Bashiru next season, he could line-up against Reading. The Championship fixtures are released on June 23 and the season is set to begin across the weekend of July 30-31.
