This stat about Barcelona will make you question the sanity of Spanish football

La Liga is very stingy when it comes to Player of the Month awards.

This is the most absurd thing we have heard in a long time.

We know it can get a little tiresome constantly heaping praise upon Lionel Messi, but we can all agree that he deserves every individual award that comes his way, right?

The little maestro has picked up almost every conceivable accolade football has to offer except one – a La Liga Player of the Month award. Granted, the league only started handing it out at the start of the 2013/14 season, but now it has been given out 18 times to people NOT named Lionel Messi.

101 Great Goals pointed out the unfathomable fact that the world’s greatest player hasn’t been deemed the best performer in La Liga in any month since September 2013.

And just as strangely, no player has won the award at all while playing for Barcelona. Granted, they had an off-season under Martino in 2013/14 but last season they started in unstoppable fashion and, you know, sort of ended up winning the league.

In the meantime, Cristiano Ronaldo has won two Player of the Month awards. Finally the Real Madrid star has found one measurement where he is definitely better than his arch-rival.
