Statistically speaking, Sunderland had the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
Whoscored.com have crunched all the data they gathered during the 2014/15 Premier League season and have released their statistical Team of the Year.
The team has some surprise inclusions and only features four players who made the official PFA Premier League Team of the Season. These are Branislav Ivanovic, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa of Chelsea and Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is Sunderland keeper Costel Pantilimon between the posts. The Romanian had far and away the best save success rate last campaign with 79.8% which dwarfed David de Gea’s 69.4%.
The other two unusual selections come in defence where Chris Smalling and Nacho Monreal make the defensive line. Both players have been perpetually improving this season and finished with the highest average match rating in the league for their respective positions.
