Can it get any worse?

The bad news keeps coming for Manchester United fans.

Supporters of other clubs will have little sympathy, after all, United had over 20 years of near-constant success, but this season the situation has been pretty abject at Old Trafford.

United made a positive, if rather pedestrian, start to the season, but since December their form has tailed off to the extent that, based on the last 10 games, the club are in relegation form.

Only Sunderland, Everton and Aston Villa have picked up fewer points over the past 10 fixtures than Louis van Gaal’s side.

United are currently five points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fourth, and 10 points off Leicester City, who sit top of the table.

Here was the Premier League table back in October, after 10 games, United were averaging 1.80 points per game and sat in fourth place.PL form table1The majority of United fans now seem to want the manager to leave, and judging by his comments after Saturday’s loss to Southampton, Van Gaal himself seems resigned to his fate.

“I’m very disappointed that I cannot reach the expectations of the fans,” Van Gaal said.

“They have, or they had, great expectations of me, and I cannot fulfil them. So I am very frustrated because of that. You have to play football to entertain the fans. I don’t think we have entertained the fans, so they can be very angry.”
