The Fergie vs Wenger documentary is a must-watch

Conan Doherty

Fergie vs Wenger. Will we ever see the like of it again?

Yes, there are other big rivals on this planet and, honestly, Alex Ferguson himself probably had tougher opponents in his time too but few duels were filled with such genuine hatred.

United and Arsenal did not like each other one bit and that stemmed from the disdain at the top between the two managers. Respect? Sure. Hatred? Oh yes.

On Monday night, Channel 5 aired a documentary that won the hearts and minds of these isles. Football fans were gripped to the Fergie vs Wenger: The Feud show that detailed and brought back to life the finest rivalry of the Premier League era to date.

With honest interviews with some of the key protagonists of the time and the battles, and with previously unseen footage from changing rooms and team meetings, the emotions felt as raw as ever for an hour of television gold.

Phil Neville was there too.

Alex Ferguson’s explosive fallout with Match of the Day showed off the supreme power and attitude of one of football’s great leaders as he walked out on John Motson, declaring, “you fucking know the rules here”.

Between 1996 and 2013, Fergie vs Wenger was a fixture a total of 49 times.

Played: 49
Fergie won: 23
Wenger won: 16
Draws: 10

The Scot also finished with 13 league titles to Wenger’s three but, regardless of your allegiance, this is a show for every football lover.

It’s available for Great Britain and Northern Ireland viewers right now on Channel 5’s online catch-up player, My5.

It’s also doing the rounds all over the internet and it really is worth your time.
