Sunderland agree to replace 2015/16 shirts with Adam Johnson’s name on the back

“We hadn’t sold that many anyway.”

To be fair, this is probably the right thing to do.

Sunderland supporters who bought shirts with Johnson on the back will be understandably reluctant to sport the jerseys in the wake of Adam Johnson’s conviction for sexual activity with a 15-year-old.

Johnson faces a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of intimate interaction the teenager.

And supporters who believed Johnson’s innocence prior to the trial, supporting the 28-year-old by purchasing shirts emblazoned with his surname, will be entitled to swap the jerseys for new ones.

An employee at the Stadium of Light club shop told ChronicleLive: “We have exchanged some shirts and as long as it is this current season’s shirt we will replace it.”

The employee added: “We hadn’t sold that many anyway,” when asked how many supporters had demanded a refund.
