Sunday’s transfer gossip: Spurs target McCarthy,Delph to cost Liverpool €10million and Reus Chelsea bound

Could the Republic of Ireland man swop Merseyside for London

Kevin McGillicuddy

The Republic Of Ireland contingent at Goodison Park may be about to be reduced by one significant member.

If Martin O’Neill or Roy Keane want to catch a few of their international charges in the Premier League their best bet is to go watch Everton. Well it seems that they might have to head to White Hart lane shortly to watch one of our better midfielders if this morning’s story in the Sunday Express comes to fruition.

Arsenal and Tottenham were believed to be battling it out for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin but now it seems that Spurs have taken a shine to James McCarthy instead and want him to move south to London from Merseyside.

Roberto Martinez doesn’t want to lose one of his prize players but if €30million is put in front of him he may find it too hard to turn down, especially as funds are required to arrest the club’s slide in form this season.

Everton v Stoke City - Premier League

Liverpool’s search for a replacement for Steven Gerrard could see them pay almost €10million for a player they could get in the summer for nothing. There’s good business sense from Anfield once again.

Fabian Delph is understood to be a key target for Brendan Rodgers and according to the Sunday Mirror Liverpool are considering a bid so they ensure he does end up at Anfield despite being able to get him for nothing when his contract runs out in the summer.

It would also allow the Aston Villa man 6 months to try and prefect his own ‘Hollywood’ style passing that Liverpool will miss next season with Gerrard’s departure.

Chelsea v Aston Villa - Premier League

Staying with Liverpool and it seems that Anfield could be a hive of activity this January with Brendan Rodgers getting out his chess-board to try and manipulate deals all over the place. But there may be a large Italian sized obstacle to any possible incomings.

According to the Daily Mail Liverpool will have to shift Mario Balotelli first before they get to do any wheeling and dealing in the transfer window. This might include a deal to bring goalkeeper Sergio Romero to Anfield from Sampodoria with Balotelli heading in the opposite direction.

That may also allow Rodgers to try an audacious attempt to sign Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli with a rumoured fee of almost €40 million on the striker’s head.

Juventus FC v SSC Napoli - 2014 Italian Super Cup

Jose Mourinho is usually a man who doesn’t dabble too much in the January transfer window but he may be forced into action this month to try and put in place a deal for Marco Reus.

The Borussia Dortmund maestro has been linked with pretty much every club in Europe at this stage and Chelsea may have the upper hand in signing him according to reports in today’s Sunday Express.

Andrew Schurrle has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge and Jose’s first signing in his second term at the club could be about to head back to Germany as part of a deal for the attacker.

Borussia Dortmund v FC Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Final

Manchester City are still looking to confirm the signing of Wilfried Bony and now it’s believed they are also chasing a France forward to further bolster their striking options.

Not content with signing the Swansea hitman, they’re also eyeing up the Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, in a deal worth over €30million according to the Daily Star

Manuel Pellegrini is willing to fund the move for Bony and the 23 year old Ligue 1 striker by getting rid of Stevan Jovetic to Juventus and getting cash for Alvaro Negredo who’s currently on loan at Valencia.

Real Betis Balompie v Olympique Lyonnais - UEFA Europa League

Tony Pulis is already preparing for life after Saido Berahino despite West Brom’s constant denials he’s on his bike to Anfield or Tottenham. Pulis has a certain, ahem, style of player he favours and Jamie Vardy of fellow struggler’s Leicester fits the bill.

Pulis needs to spend wisely and according to The Telegraph Vardy would cost in the region of €8million.

Southampton v Leicester City - Premier League
