Steven Gerrard’s top Rangers target will not be coming to Ibrox

Won't be happening

More players will be joining Rangers, but Martin Skrtel will not be one of them

He had been viewed by Rangers manager Steven Gerrard as a potential target due to his age and their history playing for Liverpool together, but it now appears that Martin Skrtel’s proposed move to Ibrox is a goner.

Gerrard had considered signing the Slovakian to strengthen his side at the Glasgow club, but Skrtel’s agent Karol Csonto has confirmed that – despite contact between the two – his client’s wage demands are too much for the Scottish club to afford.

Csonto admitted that while Fenerbache centre-back would be interested in linking up with his former teammate, Rangers and Skrtel are “terribly far apart” in terms of agreeing to a financial package.

Speaking to Slovakian football website Pro Futbol, Csonto said that despite the interest Skrtel is likely to remain in Turkey for another season: “The only option in the summer transfer window is a market such as China or the US MLS, if it’s interesting for him, and if not, he will stay with Fenerbahce.”

The former Liverpool defender’s agent revealed that not only were Rangers only able to afford to offer a fraction of Skrtel’s £60,000-per-week contract demands but also that they could not come close to Fenerbache’s valuation of £5m.
