Wants an experienced defender on board

Steven Gerrard is already drawing up his transfer wishlist ahead of his first foray into club management.

Gerrard is expected to be appointed new Rangers manager as early as this afternoon, after agreeing a deal late on Thursday night.

The Liverpool legend is understood to have drafted in Gary McAllister as his assistant manager and Gerrard is looking at another former Reds teammate as his top transfer target.

Scotland’s Daily Record reports that Gerrard is hoping for a reunion with Martin Skrtel at Ibrox.

Gerrard and Skrtel played together at Liverpool for seven years and clearly had a great working relationship judging by the defender’s comments on his former captain.

“I can say only good things about him,” Skrtel said of Gerrard in 2015. “From the first day I came to Liverpool he was here to help me. He gave me a hand every single day with everything I needed. I need to say thanks for that.”

Skrtel moved to Fenerbahce in 2016 for a fee of around £5 million and, as recently as last weekend, the Slovakian centre-half was showing off his toughness and dedication to the cause.

That’s just the kind of fight that Gerrard will be eager to see on display during his first experience of the Old Firm derby, where he will come up against former manager Brendan Rodgers.
