Sheffield United promptly score just a minute into the game
Ryan Reynolds had a bold prediction for Gary Lineker and co ahead of Wrexham’s FA Cup clash with Sheffield United, on Sunday.
Reynolds was in attendance at the Racecourse Ground for one of the biggest games in Wrexham’s recent history as they took on the Blades – a team three divisions above them in the football league pyramid – in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Deadpool actor co-owns the club alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney. Although McElhenney couldn’t make it to the game, Reynolds had made the trip across the Atlantic to Wales for the game.
Speaking to Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes before the game, Reynolds was unsurprisingly in a buoyant mood, and spoke of his excitement for the game. Asked if he gets nervous, the Hollywood star replied:
“Of course I do, each match I’m pacing around like a caged lion. I get nervous because this is an extraordinary moment, it’s a classic David vs Goliath story.
“But you guys know this more than anybody on earth, that this is football, this is the beautiful game and absolutely anything can happen.”
He then followed it up with a bullish but tongue-firmly-in-cheek prediction, saying: “I’m going to go on the record right now and say that there is a chance – albeit a very slim chance – that Sheffield United pulls off a miracle today!”

Tough start for Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham
That Ryan Reynolds prediction did not age brilliantly though, with Ollie McBurnie scoring after just a minute of the game to put the Yorkshire club ahead.

This was followed by defenders Jordan Tunnicliffe and Aaron Hayden both going off injured for the Welsh hosts in the first 10 minutes of the game.
After a frenetic opening 30 minutes, the score remained 1-0 to Sheffield United, with Wrexham – and Reynold’s – hopes of a cup upset not extinguished just yet.
