“He’s on a free.”
Roy Keane echoed the thoughts of Man United fans everywhere with hilarious David de Gea U-turn following the disastrous start that Andre Onana has made at the club.
The former Ajax keeper joined United with a lot of promise as he replaced long-term number one De Gea in nets, and help them play more expansive football starting from the back.
However, repeated blunders from the new shot stopper has cost the Red Devils valuable points, and the fans are losing confidence in him as the games go by.
Keane had been very critical about de Gea during his time at United, at one point even stating that he was “sick to death of this goalkeeper” and that if he was in the changing rooms with him, he would be “swinging punches.”
Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the Irishman couldn’t help but crack a joke at his own expense.
Gary Neville said: “Roy, you were very vocal about David de Gea’s time being up at Manchester United.”
“No, I would have kept him” replied a smiling Keane, which was met with a rupture of laughter.
“Huge mistake letting him go. Can we not get him back? He’s on a free.
“No, he had to go. He was making too many mistakes.”
Continuing on Onana, Keane said: “Oh, not great. Obviously a really poor start. We talk about positions at any big club, goalkeeper at Manchester United is huge.
“David made mistakes, but he’s (Onana) already made six or seven big mistakes that have led to goals. It’s a long way back.
“We’ve seen goalkeepers come to United and they’ve had a tricky start and we worked with them and they seemed to be really good goalkeepers, but there seemed to be no way back for them.”
