River Plate plan to take Viagra for game in Bolivia to combat altitude problems

They'll face a stiff challenge etc...

Sean Nolan

An interesting tactic for the Argentinian side ahead of a Copa Libertadores clash against San Jose

We don’t know if this qualifies as a PED but news from South America suggests that the famous River Plate club are going to give a well known drug a try in a rather unusual way.

River Plate will be playing San Jose in Oruro tonight and the Bolivian club play at a ground that is 3,700metres above sea level. As we saw with poor old Anderson yesterday, playing at altitude in Bolivia can be demanding but River Plate think they may have a solution.

Goal quote a member of the club’s medical staff: “Viagra will stimulate the circulation of oxygen in the blood and helps the players breathe better.”

The team are also reported in Marca to be taking caffeine and they will have oxygen available for players in need

A club doctor claims that River Plate are prepared to “to hydrate and try to supplement with oxygen those who have problems with altitude.”

This is certainly true, but whether the normal effect of Viagra has a detrimental effect on the players will certainly be interesting to watch.
