He was reportedly caught speeding.
Republic of Ireland and Sunderland midfielder was reportedly involved in a car accident on Saturday.
According to unconfirmed social media reports, the former Manchester United man was caught speeding by Northumbria Police, with images of him being escorted into a police car surfacing on Twitter.
Gibson was previously banned from driving for 20 months in September 2015 following a drink-driving incident in which he struck a cyclist. He was playing for Everton at the time.
The 30-year-old was not due to be involved in Sunderland’s match with Preston North End as he continues to recover from a groin injury, but was believed to be on his way to the Stadium of Light to watch his teammates.
Sunderland Football Club and Northumbria Police have yet to confirm the incident.
