One of the strangest transfer rumours of the summer began to spread earlier this week – Robin van Persie joining Rangers.
The Fenerbahce striker has been linked with a move away from the Turkish side, with numerous Premier League sides reportedly interested. However, the thought of him joining the newly promoted Scottish club was dumbfounding to many, including the Rangers’ manager.
Mark Warburton laughed off suggestions that any such move was on the cards, and appeared genuinely bemused by the whole story.
What started as a harmless transfer rumour though, has descended into something troubling as a Rangers fan was spotted sporting a jersey with Robin van Persie’s printed name on the back.
It’s possible the fan hastily got the name printed on the jersey upon hearing the rumour, but that wouldn’t explain wearing it in public once the story has been completely debunked.
This is what months without football does to some people.
