Surely this is the nadir for Man United.
The Old Trafford faithful thought things were bad under David Moyes, but at least he reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, only to be knocked out by the mighty Bayern Munich.
Fast-forward two years, and Louis van Gaal’s men lost 2-1 to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League – a club that didn’t exist until 1999. To say it was a humiliation is a grave understatement.
If the Dutchman was hoping to wake up and forget about it, he has another thing coming. The morning papers’ backpages are absolutely scathing of the now officially comatose giant and its chief architect.
They make grim reading for anyone of a red persuasion. The key question is: How long can this continue without drastic changes?
Perhaps most damning of all is the view of local newspaper the manchester Evening news who are the first to openly call for LvG’s sacking.
