Pedro has only played eight minutes for Spain at Euro 2016 thus far but his involvement could come to a complete close depending on how manager Vicente del Bosque deals with the Chelsea winger’s comments.
Pedro, who has been replaced by Nolito on the left wing for Spain, has hit out at his lack of game time in France during an ill-tempered interview on Spanish television.
“I had other expectations when I arrived here,” Pedro said, in quotes appearing in the Mirror. “And it’s not been what I wanted.
“To assume this role is very difficult for me, and if you don’t see more continuity then you wonder if it is really worth the trouble to keep coming just to be part of the group, to be with my teammates, even though I’m very comfortable.
“I thought that in the Euros I would have more continuity because I arrived in good shape.”
The fact that the 28-year-old has explicitly questioned whether it’s “worth the trouble” appearing for international duty only to be overlooked is not likely to sit well with del Bosque.
Pedro has not enjoyed the best year of his professional life after flattering to deceive in his first season with Chelsea and when asked about how he was coping with his new role as a bit-part player for club and country, the former Barcelona star claimed that he wasn’t finding it easy.
“[I’m taking it] badly, obviously. You always want to play and bring your best,” he said.
“Situations sometimes arrive at a point where you have to take a decision.”
