Paul Scholes’ forecast for Manchester United’s season does not give much hope

Tough times ahead

At this early stage of the season, who knows what to expect from Manchester United?

In the handful of games thus far this term, United have had a comfortable victory, a humiliating defeat and a few uncertain finishes to matches.

Manager Jose Mourinho seldom fails to deliver a league title at clubs but it’s looking increasingly unlikely that he will do so at the Red Devils as his Premier League rivals continue to strengthen and improve.

United legend Paul Scholes discussed the subject of improvement on Wednesday night, when his former club travelled to Young Boys in their Champions League group opener.

Ahead of the game, which took place on the Swiss champion’s artificial pitch, Scholes suggested that United supporters should not expect too much of this season.

“I don’t think any of us sat here would expect them to go and win the Champions League or the Premier League at this minute,” Scholes said on BT Sport.

“It is a work in progress, as you say. I think it has been for three or four years now.

“Do you see a team that’s improving? I really don’t think you do at this minute.

“There are so many good teams in the league now. There’s City, Liverpool and Chelsea. And they look too good for now.”
