In a game they really needed to win, Ireland came up disappointingly short.
With Germany and group leaders Poland both winning their respective group games on Saturday, Ireland desperately needed all three points against the Scots.
However, Shaun Maloney’s goal early in the second half cancelled out Jonathan Walter’s opener and sank Irish hearts.
Unsurprisingly, the consensus on social media was that the result was a huge let down. Some praised the Boys in Green for their effort against the Scots while others put it down to “same old Ireland, missing out on another major tournament”.

Proud of the boys tonight but 1st half performance didn't match 2nd half unfortunately, could have had 3 points but wasn't to be #COYBIG 🍀

If you can't beat Poland and Scotland at home, you have really no business being at the Euros. Same old story. #coybig

We really lack the cynicism and cuteness displayed by Scotland throughout the game. Same against Poland
