The incident happened before kick-off.
Olympique Marseille are in Portugal for their Europa League meeting with Guimaraes and heading into the match, the French side knew that a win would be a big boost to their qualification hopes.
Events on the field were overshadowed though by an ugly altercation that occurred before kick-off. Footage has emerged of what appears to be Patrice Evra kicking a supporter in the head after a heated discussion between the players and fans turned violent.
According to reports, a number of Marseille fans had made their way out of the stand and headed pitchside. The Marseille players went over to the advancing horde and after Evra heard some of his own fans insulting him, he retaliated.
L’equipe is reporting that the former Manchester United and Juventus full-back had to be escorted into the dressing room by his teammates Rolando and Doria.
Evra wasn’t named in the starting XI to begin with, but because the defender was sent off before the game started, Evra’s name is still down on the substitute list but he can’t enter the fray.
Here’s the incident in full.
