Cork City have been listed as the favourites to push champions Dundalk to the brink this season and they got off to a great start this evening.
Cork had a well-taken brace from Sean Maguire to thank for taking maximum points.
Maguire, who was making his debut for City, was calmness personified after the break as he poked the ball past Bohemians goalkeeper Dean Delany.
Bohs looked bereft of answers and it was the hosts that extended the lead. Kenny Browne played the ball over the top and Maguire was there to latch on. He looked to be at too acute an angle to finish but he did just that as he slotted through Delany’s legs and make it 2-0.
Over at Richmond Park, St Patrick’s Athletic lost 3-1 to Galway United as President Michael D Higgins watched on.
Christy Fagan put the Saints ahead with a second half header but Vinny Faherty equalised soon after. The visitors took home all three points with goals from Enda Curran and John Sullivan.
Finn Harps beat Derry City 2-1 thanks to goals from Dave Scully and Ryan Curran.
Josh Hanlon and Kevin O’Connor were the Longford Town scorers as Wexford Youths began life in the top flight with a loss.
