Michael Carrick picks his dream Manchester United five-a-side team and it’s a bit mad

The return of fly goalies

Michael Carrick ignores his defensive team-mates in place of a team full of attackers

There isn’t much room for tactical nuance when it comes to five a side. A goalie and then the other four go hell for leather is the usual format, and even more cautious sides may include one defensive player to ‘mind the house’ along with the keeper.

However, it seems Michael Carrick doesn’t have any regard for your preconceptions of how five-a-side teams should be set up. In fact, based on this selection, if Carrick ever goes into management, we’re in for a Kevin Keegan-style treat.

On the Manchester United website, Carrick was asked to pick a five-a-side team of his current team-mates and the midfielder threw in more than a few curveballs.

Firstly, he didn’t select David de Gea. But it wasn’t a snub to the Spaniard, Carrick didn’t pick any keeper. And alongside himself, Carrick chose Falcao, Angel di Maria, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Not a defender in sight and, we assume, Carrick playing fly goalie.

However, with that level of attacking threat, they seem to be going just for the ‘we’ll score more than you’ plan.

We now genuinely cannot wait for Carrick to go into management, just to see is he as gung ho as this.
