Mark Travers makes three saves to win shootout for Bournemouth

Jack O'Toole

Republic of Ireland U21 goalkeeper Mark Travers helped Bournemouth through to the third round of the League Cup after a penalty shootout win over Forest Green on Wednesday.

Bournemouth had 75% possession and shot the ball 25 times but could not break down the League Two side as the game went to penalties where Travers stepped up to save all three of the visitors spot kicks to seal his side a spot in the next round.

Travers signed a long-term contract with the Cherries during the summer and told the club’s channel that he wanted to extend his stay on the south coast as soon as an offer was made from the club.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract. On a personal note, it was a great end to last season and to now get this deal sorted, it will really help me push on and into the new season.

“As soon as the offer was there I was really keen to sign and commit my future to the club.

“The manager and backroom staff have been brilliant with me. I’ve developed as both a person and player during my time with the club and I’m excited for what the future holds.”
