Former Real Madrid full back Marcelo left the pitch in the tears after he was shown a straight red card for a horror challenge.
The 35-year-old was playing for Brazilian side Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores against Argentinos Juniors of Argentina on Tuesday night when the horrific tackle happened.
While trying to win the ball back, Marcelo accidentally stamped on the leg of Luciano Sanchez, causing his knee to dislocate entirely.
Sanchez was heard screaming on the pitch and was instantly consoled by his teammates and members of the medical staff.
He was then promptly rushed to hospital and local doctors at the Sanatorio Finochietto hospital are expecting that he will be ruled out for anywhere between eight-12 months.
Marcelo was subsequently shown a red card for the challenge but was seen leaving the pitch visibly distressed and left the pitch in tears.
Argentinos released a statement offering their support to him, saying: “We are rivals, not enemies”.
The former Brazil international also sent his condolences to Sanchez, posting on Instagram: “Today I had to experience a very difficult moment inside the field. Accidentally injured a fellow profession. I want to wish you the best possible recovery, @luciano.sanchez03. All the strength in the world!”
