Manchester United’s forgotten man Nick Powell makes successful comeback for U21s

Good start

Manchester United’s U21s made an underwhelming start to the season, losing their opening game 2-0 to Norwich.

But some of their supporters will be encouraged to see the return of Nick Powell in a United shirt.

Having signed for the club from Crewe as an 18-year-old a few years ago, big things were expected of Powell.

He started his United career with a goal against Wigan Athletic and even featured for the club in a Champions League tie against Galatasaray.

Powell’s appearance against Norwich was his first since picking up a hamstring injury in nine months.

Still only 21, reports have suggested he was considering quitting football following an unsuccessful loan spell at Leicester City.

With his contract due to expire at the end of the season, Powell will hope he can salvage his United career in the coming weeks.

At present, Powell, who can play up front or in midfield, does not have a senior squad number but that should prove no hindrance to a promotion to Louis van Gaal’s squad if he hits his markers with the U21s.
