He looked reasonable for Argentina in the World Cup but Sporting Lisbon were absolutely delighted to get £16m for him.
Marcos Rojo told reporters, last week, that he had a dream of returning to his old club, Estudiantes, when his Manchester United contract ended, in 2019.
United may expedite that return if reports in The Mirror are anything to go by.
The newspaper reports that United have let it be known that Rojo is available for a summer transfer. They may only recoup half of the £16m they paid Sporting but United would be happy to get his £6m-a-season salary off their books.
Rojo played a season for Spartak Moscow before he moved to Lisbon in a £3.5m deal. He was primarily a centre back in his first season at Sporting but did well at left back in 2013-14. His time at both clubs was affected by soft tissue injuries [thigh, hamstring, quad], meaning he averaged just 19 games a season.
He has upped that average slightly at United [22 games in 2014/15 and 19 games so far this season] but injuries have never been far away.
He dislocated shoulder after an awkward landing, last year, and hurt it again in training. He returned from a spell on the sidelines only to limp out of the 3-2 win over Arsenal.
United appear to have lost patience with the Argentine and are willing to move him on ahead of another expected clatter of summer signings.
