It’s safe to say that if this happens it will be about the only thing Memphis Depay has in common with Phil Chisnall.
The road from Old Trafford to Anfield is not well travelled. At least not if you’re a player.
The last person to move directly from Manchester United to Liverpool was Phil Chisnall back in 1964 for the grand old fee of £25,000.
Memphis Depay cost 1,000 times that amount but, if as expected, Louis van Gaal falls on his sword in the coming weeks, his Dutch compatriot’s failure to deliver on his undoubted talent will be near the top of the manager’s debit column for this season.
This time last year things were so different as Depay was being coveted by several clubs across Europe. It eventually came down to a straight fight between Liverpool and Manchester United, with the winger opting for Old Trafford.
Much was hoped for from Depay, but he has generally failed to deliver with suggestions he may be shipped out of the club this summer due to his poor attitude and less than enthusiastic displays.

Jurgen Klopp is aiming to add some pace and width to his squad this summer, and the Daily Star is suggesting that the Netherlands international could be a target for around £15 million.
The Premier League’s history is littered with examples of foreign imports who improved greatly after a difficult first season, so it would seem bizarre that Manchester United would get rid of the player, especially if Liverpool were to be the beneficiaries of his 12-month settling in period.
At the same time it’s hard to imagine Depay as a ‘Jose Mourinho player’ so if the Portuguese does pitch up at Old Trafford next month he could well be on the way out.
Alex Ferguson dug in deep to prevent Gabriel Heinze joining Liverpool in 2007. If Depay was to say he wanted a move to Anfield it could be an especially interesting first few months in the job for Jose.
