To be honest, we didn’t exactly see this one coming.
Not so much the Luke Shaw-being-linked-with-a-move-away-from-Manchester-United bit – those kind of stories have been pretty common these past couple of years; more the club reportedly interested in signing him.
According to the Daily Mail, that club is Bundesliga side, Wolfsburg, who are keen on bringing him to Germany. Their report says very little else other than that Shaw is unlikely to leave for Wolfsburg – or any club, for that matter – during the current transfer window.
The 23-year-old has had a difficult four-year spell at Manchester United, not helped by the broken leg he suffered in September 2015 and several other injuries he’s picked up in the time since. Despite this and repeated question marks over his relationship with Jose Mourinho, Shaw has recently insisted that he intends to remain at Old Trafford and finally make the left-back position his own.
However, as the Mail pointed out, Shaw’s current United contract expires at the end of this season, meaning he will be free to enter talks with foreign clubs from January onwards. Wolfsburg, who sold Swiss international left-back Ricardo Rodriguez to AC Milan a year ago, could be an unlikely next destination for him if things don’t go to plan at Old Trafford in the next 12 months.
With Shaw expected to stay put for now, it promises to be an interesting end to the transfer window for United, who are still thought to be in the hunt for two players. Mourinho indicated at the weekend that he didn’t expect the club to sign the two players he wanted, but added he remained hopeful they might sign one.
According to the press, it seems United are most likely to sign a new central defender. Leicester’s Harry Maguire was strongly linked towards the end of last week, with other reports claiming they hadn’t given up hope of signing Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld.
