Lucas Leiva rubs salt in United wounds after humbling League Cup loss

Niall McIntyre

Only in the Carabao Cup, isn’t that what they always say?

Manchester United have been knocked out of the English Football League Cup by Bristol City.

A last minute Korey Smith goal at the Ashton Gate stadium gave the home side a 2-1 lead and prevented this tie from going to extra-time, though some Manchester United supporters were pleased they didn’t have to sit through thirty more minutes of poor football from their team.

Joe Bryan gave Bristol the lead after 51 minutes of play, only for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to respond with a well taken free kick for Jose Mourinho’s side, but it was Smith and Lee Johnson’s side who had the last laugh.

That was undoubtedly a great moment for the Swede, his first goal just 8 months after suffering a cruciate ligament injury, but that wasn’t enough.

And what a goal it was. The side who are in third in the Championship moved the ball around the field well with some slick passing, before a delightful lobbed through ball set Smith up for an immortal goal in the club’s history.

They loved that one.

And so did former Liverpool player, Lucas Leiva, who is now plying his trade with Club Lazio in Italy.

Unlucky!

Manchester United fans won’t be happy with that, and they also won’t be happy with the run of form their side are on over the last few weeks.

Questions will be asked of Jose Mourinho, despite Manchester United not being at full strength tonight.
