Louis van Gaal has had his say on the recent criticism of Memphis Depay.
The Manchester United winger was heavily criticised for his apparent lack of effort against Chelsea last Sunday.
The 21 year old was a late substitute in the game, but lost the ball carelessly and failed to track back as his side conceded a last minute equaliser.
Despite a lot of the criticism of Depay being seemingly justified, Van Gaal said on Friday that the “real” Manchester United fans know the player’s worth and praised his performance for the clubs U21 side earlier this week.“I think it was a very good match for him. He could raise his confidence,” the United manager said.
“I’ve seen the reaction of the fans, the real fans who look at the second team.”
“He had three assists and he was enthusiastic. It’s good for him, that’s why I let him play. I can’t play too many in the second team because we have a lot of matches.”
“That was more or less the last time I could play with him in the second team.”
It’s no wonder Depay performed well in the U21 game, where United strolling to a 7-0 win against Norwich City, as we doubt he had to provide much defensive cover.
