Early plot twist.
It seemed all but guaranteed that Manchester United had Dutch winger Memphis Depay in their transfer sack, last Sunday, as reports circulated of firm interest from the 20-time league champions.
Having helped PSV Eindhoven to a Dutch Eredivise title, Depay’s owners admitted their star player would, most likely, be leaving in the summer. PSV also confirmed that there had been contact made by United about the player.
However, new developments from England suggest that Liverpool are now in pole position to sign the 21-year-old.
The Mirror are reporting that Depay flew into Manchester Airport on Thursday. He landed in a private jet, accompanied by advisors Kees Ploegsma and Kees Vos from sporting agency SEG International.
The trio then made the short trip to a hotel near the airport to meet with officials from the Anfield club, including chief executive Ian Ayre.
Depay, who was one of Holland’s star players at the 2014 World Cup, will be available for in the region of £20 million.
