Liverpool linked with audacious bid for unwanted Manchester United striker

Proven goalscorer

Patrick McCarry

The Gabriel Heinze saga all over again.

Even a late, late winner for Real Madrid in a champions League quarter final with Atletico did not convince Louis van Gaal about Javier Hernandez.

The Manchester United boss shipped the Mexican striker out on loan, to Real, last season and was reluctant to heap praise on ‘Chicharito’ when everybody else was.

He commented, ‘When you score a goal – as he has just done for Real Madrid – are you suddenly different? I don’t think so.’

Hernandez scored for Mexico, against Costa Rica, at the weekend, which would have helped his agent. Hernandez is getting shopped around to top European clubs and appears to have a Premier League suitor at the front of the queue.

Spanish sports outlet AS report, this morning, that Liverpool are one of three sides vying for the strikers’ services.

He scored eight goals in 27 games at Real, chipping in with four assists. He has three 10-goal-plus seasons at United despite being looked upon as somewhat of a super-sub.

AS believe, correctly, that United would be loathe to sell one of their players to a Champions League placings rival. The other two clubs said to be interested in the 27-year-old are Inter Milan and Juventus.

A fee in the region of £12m would slip Little Pea from LVG’s loose grasp.
