Evan Ferguson’s impending move to Serie A with Roma got us thinking of other Irishmen who have made the trip to Italy.
The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland and Brighton forward looks to set to complete a loan move to the Italian capital after years of injury struggle, having started only three Premier League games last season.
He’ll be hoping to emulate the success of fellow Irishman Liam Brady, who enjoyed stints at Juventus, Sampdoria, Inter Milan and Ascoli in the 1980s after earning legendary status at Arsenal.
The highs and lows of Brady’s career and move to Italy was documented in ‘Liam Brady: The Irishman Abroad’ - regarded as one of the best Irish sport documentaries of recent times, and available now on RTE Player.
Made in 2023 by Sean Casey, the film focuses on his time spent in Italy over a seven-year spell, featuring interviews with former team-mates Marco Tardelli and Claudio Gentile.
His Juventus stint brought immediate success, winning two Serie A titles, however the arrival of Michel Platini and Zbigniew Boniek meant his time was cut short due to Serie A’s foreign player limit.
But instead of moving back to England, he stayed in Italy, and was in the Serie A Team of the Year in 1983 with Sampdoria.
The documentary has an 8.5 rating on IMDB, and was described by the Irish Independent as “a documentary as sweet as Brady’s left foot,” with a five-star review.
'Liam Brady: The Irishman Abroad' is available to watch on RTE Player.
