Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has poked fun at the club’s attempt to sign Harry Maguire last season.
Maguire was awarded man of the match honours during United’s 4-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday with the defender boasting a game high seven clearances and four interceptions on his debut for the club.
Maguire completed a £80 million move from Leicester City earlier this month and Mourinho could not resist a dig at the club’s board after he had tried to bring the England international to Old Trafford the previous summer.
When asked if Maguire was what he was looking for whilst at United, Mourinho said:
“You’re right, one year later!”
The Champions League winning manager did however note that Maguire was a worthy winner of man of the match honours and he believes that he can form a reliable partnership with Victor Lindelof in defence.
“I think it’s fully deserved, the man of the match,” Mourinho said on Sky Sports.
“I think he was solid like a rock, and as we know, he’s very important for a team.
“Not only to have that tactical knowledge, to have that personality, that sense of reading the game, of being alert all the time, of confidence to play.
“He was fantastic, absolutely deserved (man of the match).”
He continued: “Maguire was good, Lindelof was good. As I always said, Lindelof can be a very good player and with Maguire I think they can make a very, very good couple.”
