Who saw this coming?

Jose Mourinho has finally been unveiled as Manchester United manager after a week of negotiations between his agent Jorge Mendes and Ed Woodward.

The former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss signs on a three-year contract, with the option of staying on until 2020.

Mourinho takes over from Louis van Gaal, who was sacked two days after securing the FA Cup for the Red Devils, and the Portuguese will be eager to deliver United’s first Premier League trophy since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

“To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game,” Mourinho said after confirmation on Friday morning. “It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

“I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I’m looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years.”
