He also spoke about the future of Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini.

On the field, Manchester United picked up another pre-season win following a 3-0 victory over Norwegian side Valerenga.

£75 million signing Romelu Lukaku made an immediate impact after being introduced at the break because two minutes later, he doubled United’s lead with a thumping header from a corner.

The future of Marouane Fellaini has been in some doubt recently after being linked with a move to Galatasaray, but the Belgian showed no signs of it bothering him as he opened the scoring in first half.

Scott McTominay wrapped up the scoring with twenty minutes to go.

After the match, Mourinho provided an update regarding the pursuit of Matic and answered questions about that image of the Serbian wearing  United’s training top.

“I’m waiting for news. I know that he wants that very, very much and when a player wants very, very much the chance is bigger, the chance is bigger. So I think we have a chance but in football until it’s official, I saw so many things happen that I refuse to say more than I am telling you now. Number 31 is a free number. It was Schweinsteiger. It’s a free jersey, we have a few free and 31 is one of them,” he said.

The former Real Madrid and Porto manager also provided some clarity regarding Marouane Fellaini’s future.

It appears that the former Everton player will not be leaving Old Trafford.

Away from internal matters at Old Trafford, in recent days,  Antonio Conte has been quoted as saying that throughout upcoming Premier League campaign, his side must not show a dip in form, unlike the situation that developed at Stamford Bridge in Mourinho’s final season at the club.

“We know it will be difficult next season. We want to try to avoid a Mourinho season. Two years ago the team ended the league in 10th place and we want to try to avoid this,” Conte said about the champions.

In response to this, Mourinho replied with a not-too-subtle dig at Antonio Conte’s hair.
